It’s been a total joy to record this wonderful album about light pollution by the amazing @denizdortok with @ollieguitarist and @lydiascochrane two months ago and it’s very exciting to see it come out with @sound.re.natura :)
... its just the right amount of weird, fabulous and beautiful. Go go listen to it ! Full album is out on spotify and bandcamp on Monday 24th of November, pre-orders are open now !

un chapitre qui se termine…

These last 2 years have been crazy and although I am looking forward to a bit less travelling and a slightly healthier sleeping schedule, I will miss going to Brussels. I’ll miss the people I got to meet, the atmosphere, the waffles, the Eurostar lounge, the second-hand shops (where I’ve spent way too much money— oops)…

This miniature is something to round off this chapter. I used snippets of my recordings of Kaija Saariaho’s “7 Papillons”, because I’ve started learning this piece a couple of months ago while in Brussels and somehow connect it to this place (and also just because Saariaho is amazing). I also added some bits of Jacques Brel’s “la bière”, because I was obsessed with this song when I first started going to Belgium (and also just because it’s Brel and Brel is amazing.)

… I mean why not combine chanson with some contemporary classical music…

I saw a pretty nice Salvador Dali exhibition in Prague last summer and started reading a little about him and surrealism in general.

Music especially in his younger years seemed to have been a big source of anxiety and nightmares. He was pretty black and white about it; When he was 38, he wrote in his autobiography in his list of pros and cons: Against Music, for Architecture.

So far, pretty unambiguous.

But, Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde seemed to have held a special place in his heart; The piece and the tale: He painted Tristan and Isolde in 1944, which is the artwork that inspired this piece here. (At the same time he also even co-wrote a ballet inspired by the tale and Wagner’s piece).

What we tried to do with this piece is develop this ambiguity.

Just want to add that surrealism is all about dreams, the subconscious, resolving contradictory conditions…
